What is a Halal Certified Product?

A halal certified product is defined as containing no animal ingredients or by-products, using no animal ingredients or by-products in the manufacturing process and no testing on animals by any company or independent contractor. Unless the animal ingredients are derived from halal slaughtered animals (zabiha), such products are not considered halal. Proof of halal slaughtered animal ingredients will be required for any product containing animal, animal derived, or animal byproduct materials.

Halal and Vegan are not always the same

Please note that “Halal” is not always a substitute for “vegan” and therefore a halal certification does not allow you to add claims of your product being vegan unless you attain certification separately.

What is a Product?

A product is considered that which has a set of ingredients different from another product, but may be in the same category type. For example, a skin lotion may be part of a skin care category, but will have different ingredients than another skin care product.

Required Documents and Information

You will be required to send a full ingredient list of your products along with a product sample that includes a retail label on the packaging. This retail label must follow the guidelines set out by the federal government or governing bodies of the manufacturing country. This may include certifications from Health Canada or the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

All applications will be reviewed once all required forms are filled and received. This may include receipt of sample product. Reviews may take anywhere from 2 to 6 weeks. Once the review is complete, the applicant will be notified whether or not their products have passed the certification process. Once approved, applicants will receive a printed and digital copy of their halal certificate.

Product Sample Requirements

Applicants are required to send product samples depending on the nature of the product being halal certified. For example, nail polish samples must be sent for testing and will only be certified once they pass our certification standards. Applicants are required to provide a tracking number and enough samples for testing. The Halal Certification Services of Canada will not pay for any products lost or damaged in transit. The Halal Certification Services of Canada will not reimburse applicants for any cost of samples or shipping costs.

Rejected Applications

If an application is rejected and a halal certificate is denied, applicants will receive a full refund of the purchase price. Refunds will be issued through the same methods from which the initial payment was made (either PayPal or credit card) and will be issued within 5 to 7 business days of the rejection notification.
